Design and Validation of a Tribological Test for 2-Stroke Lubricants
Beskrivning:
Are you a master's or bachelor's student with a passion for Machine Elements and Tribology? Do you want to contribute to the future of high-performance outdoor power equipment? Join Husqvarna Group’s Advanced Development team for an exciting thesis project focused on developing next-generation lubricity testing for 2-stroke oils. To maintain high performance while keeping products lightweight and portable, many of Husqvarna’s handheld tools - like high-power chainsaws - still rely on petrol-powered 2-stroke engines. These engines are lubricated by oil mixed into the fuel, as a separate lubrication system would add too much weight. As product performance has increased, so have the demands on 2-stroke oils. Therefore, current industry-standard lubricity tests no longer reflect the real-world conditions and performance requirements of Husqvarna engines. This thesis aims to develop a new lubricity test method that better represents the operational environment and performance of 2-stroke oils in our products. The objective Develop a robust and relevant lubricity test for 2-stroke oils used in Husqvarna engines. Scope of Work • Conduct a literature review of existing lubricity test methods, with a focus on 2-stroke oil applications. • Survey the operating conditions and materials encountered by 2-stroke oils in engines. • Design and develop a new lubricity test method tailored to Husqvarna’s needs. • Validate the test method by assessing its repeatability and relevance to engine performance. Your Profile • Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Machine Elements and Tribology. • Interest in experimental work and data analysis. • Motivated to work in a collaborative industry-academic setting. Thesis Activities • Literature study • Experimental testing (conducted primarily at LTU with support from Husqvarna) • Data analysis and interpretation • Report writing and possibly writing an academic paper Practical Information • Start Date: Q1 2026 • Location: Experimental work at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), supported by Husqvarna Group • Application Deadline: [Insert date here] • Application Process: Submit your CV and cover letter via our application portal.
